酒矸倘賣嘸

我老妈的首本名曲!她在Neway高歌的一首经典好歌《酒矸倘賣嘸》,《搭错车》赚人热泪的主题曲。

My mother's great song. She sang this in Neway the night before. 《酒矸倘賣嘸》literally translated is "Wine dry and buy any more?". It is a very old song from a very old movie 《搭错车》(English name is "Papa, can you hear me sing?" or "Riding the wrong car"). The movie is roughly as follows: A mute and retired soldier in Taiwan relied on collecting garbage. One winter morning in 1958, he found an abandoned baby girl, and he named her Ah-Mei. Because of this, his wife left him. Therefore he has to be the father and mother for that baby girl. They both struggled daily poverty. However, for Ah-Mei, he was willing to work more and whistle to her from time to time. Ah-Mei graduated from high school and decided to work as a singer in a pub. Her talent was recognized and acknowledged by a famous song writer. The music company wanted to sign a contract with her. Ah-Mei really wanted to earn more money for her mute "father". So, she has decided to sign the contract, but she didn't know this contract was going to stop her from ever seeing her garbage-collecting poor father. Ah-Mei has become more famous everyday. However, her father has fallen sick because he missed Ah-Mei so much. Unfortunately she couldn't go see him and she was holding a concert. So, she sang this song 《酒矸倘賣嘸》knowing that her father was listening to her via radio. The song began with "Without you, where am I. If you never fed me, gave me love, if you never protected me, what would become of me?..." He was slowly loosing his breathe while listening to the song, and slowly passed away. Ah-Mei was holding her tears in her eyes and finished the song...

酒矸
means the liquor bottle (empty) in Hokkien/Taiwan. The old father was collecting those empty bottles to re-sell and collect $$.

Well, this show did drew a lot of tears from me the last I watched... many years ago.
