Years of experience with different people

I am fortunate to have a chance to study and work abroad. After years of interacting with different people, I as a human being of course has developed some sort of favors and dislikes among the people of different nationality and ethic groups. Just share with you my personal view and mean no offense to some people. It is definitely not general view.


Malaysia: My hometown with multi-racial. I have had some Malay friends when I was in UK. I personally like Malay in a sense that they are very gentle and friendly. More importantly they are genuine. So, honestly I don't mind to have some close Malay friends.

India: In Netherlands, I have some chance to hang out with some Indians. The first impression is always good. But, somehow sometimes I feel like I am being approached or nice to because I have some advantages for them. So far, there is no bad experience with Indians but only good ones. I guess I was just being paranoid.

Singapore: A mixed feeling to be honest. I have a lot of Singaporean friends from my time in UK. Most of them fortunately are good at their hearts. But, minority of them really pissed me off. Some approached me really because I had some benefits for them. Some even showed different faces at different time, i.e., after I have no use. Some are selfish. But, one or two good friends of mine nowadays are actually Singaporean. So, I really believe it is just personal.

China: A huge country with huge population, therefore different characteristics of different people from different cities or provinces. Shanghai-an could be very calculative and sly. Wenzhou-an very stingy. Hong Kong-an could be very materialistic. But, overall, they are not bad people. So far, again fortunately I don't have a lot of bad vivid experience with Chinese.

United Kingdom: Honestly a mixed feeling. I did meet some very nice British, but also very bad ones. I have even been chased after with rocks by a bunch of racist kids. I have stayed with some British undergraduates before and they were bunch of immature gang. However, at church I actually have met some very friendly open minded gang. I would have to say, most British still holds that sort of multi-colony pride, which could somehow been seen as racism.

Netherlands: The Dutch is very straightforward. I was "insulted" before by some very direct comments like "you are so short", "you are fat", etc. Once you get used to it, it is not that bad. At least you don't have to guess what they are hiding. It is like an open book. Of course not all of them. Colleagues of mine in Netherlands, most of them are quite close with their personal life. But, in overall, I like Dutch, more than I like British.

French and German: Used to live with a French before on the same floor in UK. He was arrogant, rude (yet he claimed I am rude), inconsiderate, and very annoying guy. Probably that's why I didn't have good impression towards French in general. When I visited France, I somehow get the feeling I wasn't very welcomed there. French pride is something that really annoys me. Some German shared the same (of course different nationality) pride. But, luckily most German I hang out with are better than most French. They are willing to share their thoughts, even some personal life issues.

Italy and Spain: Somehow I cannot differentiate these two because most of them are so passionate, so friendly, so welcome-you-with-open-hands! I actually enjoy their company.
