Today I went to the Shanghai Library. Due to some work-related reason, I need several books (sadly as a research center, we do not have a nice library with books). My journey of the library, similar to the bank is an "interesting" experience. First of all, I need to get a membership card of course. Different service has different charge (per annual) and deposit. For instance, if I only want to borrow Chinese books, then the deposit would be 100 RMB, but for English books I have to pay 1000 RMB as the deposit. Unfortunately, due to the whole bank card incident, I did not have sufficient cash, so I got the normal Chinese books membership. First, I have to fill in a form, then go to another counter pay for the fees and then go to another one to get the card. The whole process is so like the bank...
Since I could only borrow Chinese books, so I went to the Chinese books room. After some search, I found two books which can be considered useful to my work. I was about to get the books downstairs to the book-borrowing counter. The librarian stopped me and said I don't have to take the books myself. I only need to remember the book library ID number, and then enter the number using the computers downstairs (with my library card), then I will get the books. Sound very convenient, isn't it? So I went downstairs. There were three lines of computers providing interface with the card (see picture). I entered the number after inserting the card, and after that I have to wait for 20-30 minutes in front of another counter for the books. The indicator beside the counter (see picture) will show my name.

Eventually, I have to wait 30 minutes. My God! Talk about efficiency. But, it is not the worst yet. Finally, my name was shown on the indicator. I walked to the counter and get the books. Just when I was about to get the books and leave, the librarian stopped me and said I cannot borrow these books (and THEY ARE CHINESE btw), because I don't have that service (borrow English reference books). Apparently, I could only borrow the books and read them in the library until 5:00pm. I didn't fxxking want to argue with her anymore, so I just left! What a time-wasting process! What a service. This really pissed me off. I guess... I still need to adapt to this kind of efficiency! The counter is really using some kind of automation to retrieve the books, but the technology just slow damn down the whole process. Is it wise or stupid!? Seriously...

Definitely is to increase the job rate and investment in high tech expensive equipment. To push the Chinese economy even further.
You should come to Singapore Library... it is so cool and efficient here. And there is at least 1 Library in each district.
I thought Shanghai Library is a good place. Now I know how efficient the Chinese bureaucratism is.
yeah.. i can see they create weird/redundant systems to create job vacancies.. like the ATM card replacement and books borrowing experience you had that puzzled me a lot..
